There’s much to be said about Pocket Waifu’s gameplay as it is a very extensive title with lots to do. First of all, it does follow the standard pay-to-win formula, though it isn’t very punishing. Again, this is very reminiscent of other Nutaku titles, where the game itself is free to play, but you need to shell out hard dollars to win fast and win effectively.

Either way, you can experience the entirety of the game for free, without paying a single cent, and unlock all the content through blood, sweat and tears. The game itself is built around the familiar 2D RPG layout of accessing stats, shops, quests and a gambling section through the buttons on the lower bottom of the screen. The top of the screen shows your character with his name, plus some stats like hit points and your various currencies. That pretty much covers the entire layout of the game, except for the tiny section on the bottom left that shows you the stats of the girl that you are currently romancing.

These stats are happiness, hunger, bathroom and energy, and if you’ve ever played The Sims before, you’ll be very familiar with how these work. They’re the basic needs of the girl laid out for you to consider when you decide how she’ll be spending her time. Ideally you want to top all of these off as much as possible, towards your ultimate goal, which is of course to copulate with the girl in question.

Tons of Gameplay

Now that you’re familiar with the layout, you’re probably curious about the gameplay and the actual purpose of the game. As the name Pocket Waifu suggests, this game is all about meeting, collecting and romancing various two dimensional women in an anime inspired world. There are tons of girls to choose from and it’s likely that you wouldn’t get through all of them in one playthrough, regardless of how devoted you are.

Beyond having tons of basic needs that have to be met, the girls also need to be romanced and convinced, so to speak, to sleep with you. You can consider that to be your end goal. However, the game is framed as an RPG so there are tons of tasks in the meanwhile that require your attention.

Now on the matter of the actual gameplay, it’s basically a collection of mini games. A lot of you might find this to be very disappointing, but it’s safe to say that Pocket Waifu’s minigames are among the better in this particular genre. There are tons of in-browser dating sims that drone on with either the same repetitive mini-game or several boring ones. These are far from blockbuster hits, but they’re still very entertaining and not painfully repetitive. The games help you score points with the girl in question and are crucial to progressing the story.

On top of that there’s also a ton of dialogue, in the style of classical Japanese visual novels, except unlike in those, here your choices don’t really matter much. It’s more of an expositional tool to get you to learn more about the girls’ backgrounds and immerse you in the world. What you say isn’t that important in the long run.

The Payoff

Pocket Waifu is after all a pornographic video game made by porn game legends, so naturally the payoff is going to come in the form of full-fledged sex scenes. These are unique for every girl in the game and you can only access them once you’ve fully romanced the girl and essentially gone through her storyline with sufficient in-between mini game action. However, it shouldn’t take you long to get to the endgame with one girl at least, and you should enjoy what they have in store for you.

The sex scenes, like the rest of the game, are two dimensional pre-rendered cutscenes that do not feature any input from the player. They’re basically short video sex scenes, like something out of a classic hentai. They are luckily not censored, as this game is very much targeted towards western audiences. Unfortunately, they can be a bit short at times, and they certainly don’t count as classic pornography. The game itself leans much more heavily towards a game than a porno, so it’s really not recommended for people who do not enjoy the gameplay experience.

The developers had noted in the past that their plans for Pocket Waifu were for it to be a pleasurable experience that people could dump hours into to relax and unwind. Some Criticisms

But if you wanted to buy your way through the story to get the most of the game as fast as possible, you’d go broke trying. The game has tons of content that while not locked behind a paywall, is still very unattainable.

In fact, of the nine available girls, one of them is permanently locked behind a paywall that you can only get past for free if you grind for an inordinate amount of time. It is these particular concerns that have Steam reviewers giving the game a “do not recommend” time and time again. Others, however, praise the game’s art and general vibe so it stands to reason that there is something to this game.
