Gods Of Hentai

Back in very early 2019 Eroge managed to get their title Gods of Hentai on the Steam store, hoping to satisfy people’s need for proper hentai themed MMORPG. The game developed a decent fanbase and following and a significant number of people were playing it until Steam brought down the ban-hammer. Gods of Hentai has been the topic of some oddly subtle controversy ever since, but it remains a staple of online pornography gaming.

The First Hentai MMORPG

When Gods of Hentai first came out, Eroge boasted that it was the absolutely first of its kind, which was both impressive and sad given how late the game came out. Either way, Eroge saw that the public needed a game within this genre and aimed to please. They didn’t seem to invest very heavily in triple A gaming conventions, as their game’s overall quality was very lackluster, but the public liked what they brought to the table. The main features that made the game stand out were the erotic themes that were pervasive throughout the gameplay and the fact that it truly was an open world game within which you could interact with other people. Granted, there have been many sex simulators in the past that let you interact with other people in a sexual manner, but nothing that served up an entire fantastical and adventure-filled world for you to enjoy freely with others. Other games so far limited you to servers or small rooms and even direct one-on-one interactions. You get none of that with Gods of Hentai. It’s a proper MMORPG and deserves the praise it gets for that. Unfortunately, the game met a very sad fate on Steam as even though it was a successful and respected title, Steam’s recent efforts to remove inappropriately sexual games from their platform took Gods of Hentai down permanently. This was odd considering that Steam were clear about their attempts to remove specific inappropriate themes from their library including but not limited to the involvement of children in sexual situations and the promotion of non-consensual sexual interaction. Gods of Hentai didn’t technically have any of these features. There were no underage characters of themes of rape what-so-ever, but it didn’t seem to matter. Without any public explanation the game was expunged from the Steam library. These days you can enjoy the game on Eroges’s website with all the content the game featured before, but it’s sad that it’s not available on the largest PC software market out there. It undoubtedly kneecapped the game’s popularity and growth.

Subtle but Effective

At first glance, there are tons of criticism to be levied against Gods of Hentai, provided you didn’t know what you were getting into when you first picked it up. First of all, with all porn games there’s the connotation that perhaps the game’s content was made to be masturbatory, at least to some extent. And while Gods of Hentai certainly has some hentai in it, it’s not the kind of game you can enjoy one-handed. The game’s main focus seems to be the MMORPG elements. It takes its combat and questing very seriously and it shows. Eroge seem to have taken a lot of inspiration from the MMORPG games of old that featured a similar isometric style, like Conquer Online and Ragnarok. And speaking of old-school 2D MMOs, this game is extremely behind the times. It’s very rare to see a two dimensional MMORPG these days as that perspective is very lackluster for an open world game that you’re supposed to experience with other people. There’s nothing inherently wrong with 2D games, but for an MMO, it’s definitely a downside. Further, the game doesn’t even feature any faux-3D tricks to make it more appealing. It is straight up a two dimensional experiences with animated sprites. – a proper old school flash game. It’s very confusing to see such underwhelming graphics and design paired with the difficult-to-run MMORPG open world mechanics. One must wonder whether Eroge might have perhaps distributed their investment in poor proportion between their designers and their coders. As for the code, it runs really well, without a doubt. The programmers knew what they were doing as it’s clear from the get-go that Gods of Hentai is going to be a smooth experience. You will never experience any lag or slowdowns and the game works really well on older computers. The netcode too seems to work quite well which is always a very positive sign for an online video game.

The Gameplay

This game can be very entertaining provided it’s your cup of tea. These days even games like Diablo 3 retain niche status, even though they have millions of players, simply because of their perspective. There’s always going to be a sort of bias against the isometric camera perspective because it is somewhat retro and extremely limiting. If you were a fan of 2D MMOs when you were a child and you’d like to play a proper adult online title with other people, it might be right up your alley. The gameplay has you explore the aforementioned 2D isometric landscape for NPCs and monster encounters and there’s much to be done before combat. You can prepare your party and discover new companions that would love to join you on your quest to kick monster butt. Once you find a particular baddie you wish to duke it out against, the screen switches to a 2D sideways layout that’s very reminiscent of old school fantasy RPG games, so any illusion of three dimensional movements is completely lost. Even worse than that, there’s nothing you can do during combat except wait for the action to play out. You prepare your squad before the battle, but once it starts, there are no inputs. You simply have to wait it out. That’s a very underwhelming combat concept and it rips you out of the immersion somewhat. In between the combat and the NPC interactions you’ll also get the occasional visual novel style conversation with some of the game’s characters. During these interactions you might learn about new quests or discover some new companions that might want to team up with you. These scenes can also be somewhat erotic at times, though nothing that features full on hardcore pornography will be found there. To see the actual smut that this game hides deep below the surface you’ll have to patiently grind away at improving your relationship with every single companion you pick up and hope you get them to a point where they’d like to take their clothes off. You get a special section for these scenes, separate from the combat action, where you can unlock sexual scenes that you can view to your heart’s content and some of them are relatively enjoyable. Generally, though, they are simple 2D animations with very little heart and they’re relatively short. You’re not going to get a lot of mileage from this particular smut.

Some Final Comments

This game can be painfully underwhelming given the low quality of content that it offers, but tons of people seem to be very dedicated to playing it. It’s likely that these people are attracted to the quantity rather than the quality, as this is a relatively large game and that’s very important for an MMO. You can’t really know whether Gods of Hentai is your kind of game until you try it, but there’s nothing stopping you as it is entirely free. There are no minimum requirements for, per se, as the game is so old and retro that you could run it on any browser capable device. It is not recommended, however, to try and play it on a mobile phone as those are notoriously incompatible and gaudy when it comes to actual in-browser games. If Eroge come out with an actual Android port that would certainly be a much better experience as the game’s interface is somewhat mobile friendly. Besides, Conquer Online, which is an old game that is very reminiscent of Gods of Hentai, has received an Android port in the past and it works quite well. Some additional on-screen buttons were necessary, but the same could be done with this game. You might even get a lot more mileage from this game’s content on your phone as there’s a lot of passive activity, especially during the combat, so it might make for a great pastime. It’s also likely that the game’s rather simplistic graphics might look much better on your phone as they’re not of an inherent low quality – they’re just rather low res and made for a 2D canvas. Typically, these types of game art fare better on mobile devices. Gods of Hentai is easily one of the more controversial hentai games out there, but that’s likely because it’s one of few hentai games that has managed to accrue a large following. There’s nothing particularly controversial within the game, from an objective standpoint and the people that play it regularly seem to really enjoy it. This could be you too someday if the game turns out to be your type of hentai experience. It’s free so you have nothing to lose by checking it out.
